As you might have noticed, the 690 has impressed me a lot. I've claimed it's the only bike out there that can do EVERYTHING and not only doing it but doing it well. This is, though assuming you have both enduro and SMC wheels, forks, shock and brakes.

Well, to take what it's not great at first:
Autobahn - 120kph is OK for a while (so OK in Norway and US then) but take the smaller roads instead
Hard core cross and enduro - It's just too tall and heavy (though much lighter than a XT660 or GS800, only 20kg more than my EXC). COULD be ridden in tough terrain by someone more skilled by me though.

What it's good at:
Supermoto - Not as good as the 450SMR I had, 30kg heavier, but still good fun and capable.
Gravel roads - 530EXC is better since smaller and lighter for aggresive riding
Trails - 530EXC is better since smaller and lighter

What it's great at:
Gravel touring/dual sport - 530EXC just isn't a touring bike, it's a competition bike requiring frequent service...and terrible for those tarmac transport stages. 690 actually works good on tarmac even with enduro tyres/wheels and more fun (lighter) than XT660/GS800 on gravel
Tarmac touring - assuming twisty roads...but that's a given for me. That's why I ride! I have no problems keeping up with my sportsbike buddies even on wide, open roads as long as a bit curvy. The more narrow/twisty the better it works and if really tight, the sportsbikes just couldn't keep up. Not very often I felt I lacked power really (do have evo2 kit, dyno job and low gearing though)
Race Track - I would probably be a second faster on my superdukeR...but more fun with 690. And cheaper if crash, normally just hose off dirt.

For me, bikes are all about FUN, and that's really what the 690 is all about too 8)

Hi Pingvin, you sound like just the person to ask!!!
Currently I have a KTM 250 sxf for playing int he dirt, a Yamaha R6 for speed on the road but am looking to get myself a motard. :D
i have narrowed the choice between a KTM 530 or the 690. The bike will be predominantly used as a daily commute but also want to have the option of churning it up off road.

since you own both - What would you suggest? Have located one of each in motard form for the same price but cannot decide..

Hi Kecks and welcome :D

The 690 is a much better road bike and got "normal" service intervals. But the 530 is a much better dirt bike, that's why I bought it (though it's big compared to Your 250).

So if mainly commuting (especially if long-ish) and occasional off road and not to technical, the 690. Or if you're really good and think it's fun with a challenge with a bigger bike off road.

For technical stuff the 530 is much better and if the commute is short I guess it's the better option. Though not long service intervals, I change engine oil every 15hr and gear oil (separate) every 30hr so not that bad.

Best is 690 on SUMO wheels and 530 for dirt like I've got

Hope helped :?

Cheers Pingvin! I have been obsessing over the bikes trying to decide between the two. I have read review after review the past 2 weeks and the bottom line is the 690 has a brilliant engine on her.
I appreciate you taking the time to help! I was fantastic stumbling across your thread online as it perfectly suited the info i was chasing!
Do you still have your 690? enjoying it??

After a couple of years of tarmac only as a SMC, my 690 is once again a enduro bike. That is, more of a dual sport bike, mainly because of dual sport tyres. Pirelli Scorpion MT90 Works fine on tarmac (though not pushed them hard yet) and very well on hard gravel. Rubbish in mud, though but did a couple of laps on dry MX rack and they worked OK. Also chickened out and installed Koubalink which lower rear 1 inch...and it's still tall  Dropped the fork but only 20mm (eyeballed it so missed by a few mm). I think it's got nice neutral steering, didn't feel it wasn't quick enough. We'll see...

My buddy bought a brand new 690E and bought eveything Rally Raid had too offer. We're leaving for Pyrenees (Mountains between France and Spain) next week together with a 950 Super Enduro and a 1190 Adventure R, mix of tarmac and gravel.

Are you riding that beast there from Norway

If so, do you have a seat that isn't shown in the pictures?
