Re: Spam Users

Random thought - does the software allow for a waiting period between being let in the door and posting?

Most of what I'm seeing is a brand new user spams the list the same day they get access. I'd be willing to bet that they wouldn't come back were they to have a 24 hour delay between the granting of access and the ability to post.

There's always the "respond to this email" confirmation bit which tends to weed out the simpler bots.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I'll check. Certainly an idea worth trying.

I used to have it set up so I had to activate each account before they could complete the registration, but that became too much work.
If we can't get the level down, I'll have to try that again. I'll also check on the software site to see if there are any better anti-spam packages

I've bumped up the "flood limit" which makes you wait between posts. see if that helps.

If it gets irritating for anyone, please do PM me know and I'll change your settings to be able to ignore the limit.

Is there no way to automate this so newbies have a really high limit for a period of time / number of posts before settling back down :?:

I've bumped it up to 60 seconds for everyone, and I can specify exceptions. I didn't find a setting to do this "per group" (all newbies are in the "newly registered" group. But I'll have another look. The menu system of the phpbb boards takes a bit of getting used to.

Ah, found it. All bona-fide users shouldn't have to wait between posts. If anyone has that delay, please let me know.

What constitutes a bona fide member?

I know that I'm one, but there are a couple that I'm not sure of.

You know who you are.
